Sorry bro, your logic is flawed. Would the sub be able to move more freely if he ported his box, yes. But that won't make it sound better cause it'll be over 1cu. ft. smaller than what it should be so it'll still sound horrible!

If he were running a high powered sub (over 1000 watts rms) AND was overpowering the crap out of it (2000 watts rms) then I would have no problem with him building a box as much under spec as this one is. But that's not the case. He's giving that thing it's rated power so he should stick to the suggested box specs. If it sounds distorted now, it's not because of the box size or type, it's because his gain/bass boost/xover freq. isn't set right.

You did say it would sound better
well even having a small ports going to help it sound better
. That's like telling a friend who just fell face first into a pile of sh*t that he's lucky he didn't get it on both sides of his face.............but at the end of the day he still has sh*t on his face, right? I'm not bashing you, just trying to get you to understand car audio a little better but it's on you if you want to learn. I just wish someone were there to teach me when I was coming up, would have saved me alot of money along the way that's for sure!

I'd say ported, because it'll get a little louder than a sealed box and will hit those low notes with a little more emphasis as compared to a sealed box. I just built a box for my boy, he's got a 15" Treo SSI sub and I put it in a box that I designed for him, 2.5 cubes tuned to 36Hz and it has excellent cone control and sounds very good for being a 15. Far more accurate than even I expected, and he loves it so it's all good.

That all depends on your expectations and your definition of sound quality. The subjective nature of that means there is no right or wrong answer, it just depends on the wants/needs of the end user.

Sounds to me like your grounds are too long if you "ran them on the passenger side of the car"

The grounds for your amps should be a foot or less. Those are the grounds you're talking about, right?

Just a thought, did you run your ground right to the negetive side of your battery??

im just talking upon my experience, i had a sony xplod, now i know its got no power going into it compared to this 15, only had 300 rms, but i had it in a small box and it sounded alright sealed and then i drilled a port, i think 4 inches, and it made it sound alot better, so im not necessarily uninformed, i know the main basics of car audio and some, not all of it, but with a sub like that, having a small sealed box could be real bad

when i first got my type-r the geniuses at bestbuy told me to buy a tiny sealed box, not knowing anything, i took it to the real audio guys and they said the sub would blow it up, so i just said, eh what the heck, lets try it for fun, we made the box and after 3 bumps the box blew up, took it back to best buy and they wouldnt give me money back, then i got the real box,

but, what im saying here is you should probably figure out what the exact specs for a box is for a sub and get that, your going to be happy you spent the money in the end, whether its ported or sealed.

Well I know you arent supposed to do that, thats why im asking him. There was a length issue with the ground wire.

LMAO, not even sure where to begin.....

Well bro, saying you had a sony Xplod in a small box means absolutely nothing. We don't know the size of the sub or the box. And a port is waaaaaaaaay more than a hole in a sealed box, the port diameter/shape and length dictate not only box volume but the tuning frequency of the box as well.

So you really are uninformed if you think simply drilling a hole into a sealed box = ported box. Just to give you an idea......if you have a box that is 14x14x14 it's 1.1cu.ft. sealed before sub displacement. If I simply cut a hole in the box that's 4" round, that box would be tuned to 101.28Hz before sub displacement. Have you ever heard a 100Hz bass note? It's surely not what I want my subs to be playing, that's for sure! But let me guess, your sub and box did well on your bass heavy, 40Hz and below bass notes, right? Show me a sub and box that can play 60Hz below box tuning and I'll show you the McLaren SLR in my garage!

Lastly, your sub and this guys' 15 are probably getting about the same power, in theory. I'd venture to guess that the impedance rise of your understatedly inefficient box significantly reduced the actual output of the amp by anywhere between 15-30% if not more.

So then you're comparing an inadequate sealed box to an adequate ported box and coming to your conclusion that ported > sealed. That's like saying Nankang tires are better than Pirelli's only to find out when you road tested the Pirelli's they weren't inflated.

No, he ran them to a bolt in his kick panel area. Not supposed to do that either! The ground should be within 12-18" of the amp. I have no idea why he would run a ground from the trunk to the kick panel, that's definitely a first!

what are nantang tires. id rather have some pirrelli's any day.

what were you saying that the box was made of thin wood??? and your "type r" was too strong???

im lost. idk why ppl buy car audio from best buy. you could get the same stff for half the price online.

Hahaha, just trying to show how ridiculous his comparison is. Nankang is an inferior off-brand tire.

Sounded to me like he bought one of those build a box kits and tried to use it for his Type R.

Yeah, BB is a rip-off for car audio but there's something very comforting about being able to make a short drive to your local store to buy/return something vs. waiting/paying for shipping to and from your online vendor of choice.
