Instead of using modeling clay to fill the gap. What about just using a Boom Mat and cutting it down to fit?

Because most midrange car audio speakers are meant for IB applications

I was referring to using it more just as a gasket to help close off the gap. i.e. cut the back off and use just enough to seal the speaker to the face of the baffle and fill the gap.

or get the little 2 pack of I think 12"x12" dynamat sheets from Best Buy. I plan on getting the full door ones but its an option for those who don't want all the work and time into doing full doors

Oh, I see. That would work so long as your gap is slightly smaller than the height of that baffle material, and is consistent all the way around the speaker.
