Default Audio Upgrade

I'm getting a little bit of $$ so I've decided to invest it into my whip.

With the coming spring I want to purchase a new set of rims, and a new audio system.

My problem is I haven't the slightest about what to buy.

Basically I'm playing with anywhere from 4-600 bucks.(for audio). Recently a friend of mine brought his Firebird around with his recently installed deck/amp and subs. I think the power of the system was about 350w, Which sounded good, but we both agreed that we both wanted a little bit more for each of our cars. I think I would be satisfied with something around 5-600w. Judging from the sound of his equipment. I'm def looking to buy a new deck(new) however I don't see any fault in purchasing the subs and amp used. I've been searching around craiglist for some potential buys.

Any suggestions on what I should go with?
What are your cars hooked up with?

Out of those two, I'd take the Kicker subs. But the amp they come with doesn't make much sense since it's a two channel. I'm pretty sure that box is wired with one input that has a 2 ohm load, which doesn't work with that amp very well at all. If you want, try and get the subs without the amp.

i cant see the kicker ad, so idk

jl makes good subs, and fusion makes great amps. if thats a powerplant series i would go for it. my friend is running 5500 watts of nothing but fusions and its amazing. he makes any car within 50 ft feel like they have a banging system.

How are hell they measuring watts in car stereos these days? I mean, I remember when a 35 watt per channel car stereo kicked butt. I have a 100 wpc Onkyo receiver and a pair of Cerwin Vega's in my living room. You can't scream loud enought to be heard over the music if I turn it up. How can you run 5,500 watts in a car? Are they just adding up the power that runs into each speaker? Maybe multiplying by a factor of 10 because its at 2 ohms. I mean seriously, the most powerful Marshall Guitar amp is 350 watts. Put that in your car, crank it up and it will KILL you.

Car audio has gotten into building big power, inefficient speakers so they can use the huge power ratings for marketing purposes. It's also because while it's easy to make things nice and loud for normal music with low power, producing the huge bass that people want takes a lot of power. That's why you see 125 watt component systems and 3000 watt subs.
