Aftermarket Stereo Question

Aftermarket Stereo Question
Maybe this is a stupid question.....I really want a new stereo in my car. I have original 2001 AC Delco CD/Tape combo in there now, but I use my iPod almost exclusively with a transmitter. I find the sound quality and volume levels lacking, so I really want a MP3-ready stereo.
If I get a new stereo installed, will the volume controls on the steering wheel still work? I never had those before but really like them.

Yes - they sell and adapter to make the steering wheel controls work. Best Buy has them. Other people on here know where to get them cheaper. If you do a search you should find some threads on it.

you said it has a cassette tape slot?
id say keep the headunit, and get one these. (theres no static or distortion with one of these, like there would be with an AM/FM transmitter)
and just use the money for the headunit on upgraded speakers and tweeters! i heard kicker makes some great speakers.
I say this because once you take out the headunit you have to do a song and dance to clear the check engine light, tire pressure light, ect, once they come on.
but its up to you! let us know what you decide! (sometimes i think about getting a touch screen but havent sold myself on it!)

Mr. Monte, I hadn't thought of that. I'm still getting used to re-setting various lights via the radio. And yes, I DO get static on the transmitter (been using one for several years). So you make a good point.
So an aftermarket stereo isn't really compatible with the RDS or whatever they call it?
If I upgrade speakers I won't have the volume issues with my iPod?

You could also buy a wired fm transmitter that is connected to your antenna behind the radio. You can find these on amazon for cheap and they would sound better than the wireless fm transmitter since they are already wired in. Then you could keep your stock radio and still get upgraded speakers because they will increase the sound of your system.

Personally stay away from FM transmitters.. Specially the wireless ones! You can do a nice set up for a decent price if you have the know how to do it all yourself.. Shops will kill you on installs.. Personaly im a big fan of alpine for a great entry level setup.. A simple alpine deck(perferbly with rear usb to charge your ipod) and type S speakers all around! You will never have problems if installed correctly..

I swaped over to a cassette deck so i could use a tape adapter instead of fighting with an fm transmitter. Then i went and did some speaker upgrades and im happy. Saved money and still get ipod ability.
