Default 2006 GM Stereo Headunit volume issues

Looking for some advice. I recently bought my 2006 SS Monte which came with the GM six CD changer and XM Sat. I've noticed that the it doen't sound all that great. First of all, I need to turn the volume almost completely up in order to hear music at driving speeds. I do have that speed compensation turned on, so that's not the issue. If I have the volume at 1/4 to 1/2, you almost can't hear a thing. I turn the volume control completely up (can't go any higher) and the music still is not incredibly loud.
The second issue is the music sounds distorted. Even when volume is midway up. It really sounds bad. I have a similar GM Headunit (single CD player) in my 06 Saturn Vue and it kicks the crap out of my Monte's.
Does this sound like a headunit issue or speaker issue? And thoughts? Thanks!

did you try adjusting the bass, trebble, mids, etc. Maybe your settings are messed up.

Hard to say, but I think it's more likely to be a head unit issue vs. speaker issue because the chance of all the speakers going bad all at the same time is highly unlikely. Isn't your car still under warranty? I'd take it in and have them check it out.

This issue reminds me of when I first got my Car, I had the same thoughts.

What Gm did is they made the head unit and volume be able to go down at certain times, so your listening volume won't be loud, they did a safety feature on the head unit so it wouldn't be loud at certain times, Try researching it or looking in your owners manual on this.

All I can say is the best way to get higher volume is to change out the head unit and get a sattelite kit for the new reciever.

Then to get the sound better upgrade all four speakers with aftermarket spaekers, you will notice a big difference all for the better.

And so you can get an adapter for the steering wheel controls for the stereo to work with a aftermarket deck, or just get a new reciever with its own remote.

Stock head unit is not so great

I haven't heard all of the stereo systems in stock Montes but from his description it sounds like a definite issue, not just that of a stock system. But you're definitely right, upgrading the head unit and all speakers will be a hell of an upgrade and well worth every dollar.
