Default 2003 Monte carlo factory and aftermarket headunit

Ok I plan on installing a double din headunit in my car but my car have a factory amp....What all do I need? I have heard that some people lost all the sound after hooking up a aftermarket headunit, because they had a factory amp! Do i have to bypass the amp and do I need to trim anything to get a double din indash to fit?

Doing some searching around the site will give you answers to most of your questions...

You can get the cheap wiring harness from Walmart and your sound will be fine, Frank did this with no problems. I use the GMOS-04 and it retained everything.

The only reason people bypass the factory amp is because the aftermarket headunits have more rms power than the factory amp, so the speakers sound better with the amp within the headunit.

You will need to trim the back plastic bracket behind the stock headunit to install most double dins, even most single dins.

You'll also need the antenna adapter and mounting bracket. Also steering wheel button wiring harness if you want to keep those.

I used a dremal tool to trim out that plastic behind the radio. TBH I would just use a wire harness from walmart unless keeping your chimes is really important and as far as that onstar that isnt any good because they changed from analog to digital so you will have to pay like $300-400 to upgrade to a new digital Onstar.
