You said the installer told you he disabled the stock amplifier to your stock deck. Does that mean we have a lower output amplifier for our stock systems? and that premium owners have a higher output amplifier?

My dad's Chevy truck does NOT have the premium sound system, but it sounds damn good. It seems like he has a more powerful amplifier. He got the most basic version of the truck and stereo. It sounds so much louder though and I can't figure out why.

The front speakers are seperated with sperate tweaters. Thats why the speaker grille in front has that weird shape to it. The upper corner of the grille has a notch in it if you look carefully, and that notch is where the tweater is. So you have the two rear speakers, and with two front speakers that have sperate tweaters. This is where the 6 speakers comes from. On the window sticker to my car it says 6 speaker audio with CD- Standard.

Yea, the guy claims he disabled my stock amp, but for all I know he didnt disable anything, because we don't have one. That or we just have some stupid low output amp built into the head unit itself, and thats what he bypassed.

After driving my dad's basic truck with the most basic radio unit that Chevy offers, I had to try to find out why his is louder and clearer. If it was equal or similar sounding, I would not have asked so many questions.

I will call GM to see if an amplifier is available,, although most likely wont buy it! and go the aftermarket route.

Don't forget, your dads truck cabin is much smaller, so there is much less area for the same amount of speakers to cover. (I think this was mentioned by Mike already).

I'm almost positive you COULD have GM install a factory amp, but like I said, its so not worth it. You will pay tons of money for an ok amp, when you could spend much less on a great amp.

I would only install a GM Amp if it was inexpensive and easy to install (Plug and Play). I am sure it will be expensive and maybe even more difficult to install. My thoughts were "maybe the wires and clips are just hangin in the back of the trunk for a quick plug it in an go!!"

Good thought, but I doubt it. If GM can save a dime, they will, and if they don't need to spend money to put unneccesary wires, they wont! But hey, never hurts to ask.

Well, I went to the dealership. Surprisingly, they told me I had the four speaker system. They said the premium system is a six speaker system. I read that the standard is six speakers and the premium is eight speakers on some Monte Carlo websites. It appears there is some false advertising OR the dealership's computer is not correct.

They advised not buy GM stereo parts because it is NOT plug and play. They too advised going the aftermarket route. They said replacing broken parts is fine, but trying to enhance the system with parts may not work as expected. They did confirm amps only come with the premium system and are located in the back trunk of the 06/07 MCs. They priced the amplifier at 920 dollars without installation!!!

Is your after market amp powering the stock speakers or is it just being used to power your sub?

Just the sub...

Thats weird about the number of speakers. I know for a fact that the window sticker from my Monte says 6 speaker sound system, and I don't have an amp. Hmmmmm. If I ever have the front door panel off, I will let you all know my findings behind the door.

Where does your car say six speaker system? I would like to try to find that on my car. I think your right about the front speaker setup being split. In fact, the Chevy truck is setup that way,,except the little tweeter is not in the door,, its on the frame of the front windshield giving it more seperation. The Fader works on both upper and lower front speakers.
