K&N cone filter installed but the sound... don't know
Hi everyone.
I got a hold of a cone K&N air filter and installed it on my 04 with a 3.4. The filter is 9 inches long, 4 inches for the inlet.
At the moment, until I can get it inside the fenderwell all sealed up, it's sitting in the engine bay open to the air in there. I know it's not the optimum place but this is a trial to see how it would work at a minumum.
I removed the stock air box as well so that entire area is wide open now. I connected the air filter to the end of the MAF, keeping the original accordion shaped pipe there for now until I can get around to making a homemade FWI.
However, when I put the fitler on, I didn't even get a slightly deeper throaty sound coming. It sounds more like a small whine from a turbocharger or something along that line on top of what sound was there originally (stock setup).
Is that normal? It seems to pick up a bit quicker from stop though.

yah thats normal, you wont get a deeper sound out of your car from that...your going to hear the supercharger more and your going to get a sucking noise from it too sounding like a vacume...i personally love the sound of it

i dunno u guys, i got the 3400 and mine sounds rediculously awesome. My friend with a z28 is highly impressed with the throaty growl, but i have metal piping instead of that accoridan crap. It makes a huge differnce in sound. I also have a 9 inch filter with a 4 inch opening. I have a ported and polished maf with no screen and that got rid of the whistling noise I heard when driving (if you stand next to the car you can still here a faint recall of a turbo).

Well, I was going to build a FWI using the plumbing pipe idea (with PVC and such) I seen somewhere. Guess I'll have to wait and see what the sound does afterwards. I did notice it will be a real tight fit if I try to put this big filter in the fender. It may have to go down to the bumper level to make it a true FWI.
