Default Exhaust setup for 2000 3.8NA opinions

Hi everyone, new to the forum as a member but have been coming here on and off for a few years.
I have a 2000 Monte Carlo Pace Car with the 3.8
I have a nice size hole on in my resonator, when it started it wasn't that bad but as it got bigger the sound has become annoying and now my check engine light is on which my mechanic checked and said it's due to the resonator and probably my cat being finished now.
I'd like to get all your opinions on what you think about this setup for now. Funds are a bit tighter this year because of all my home renos so I can't do a full exhaust system but I'm thinking of doing this, 2.5" downpipe from ZZP no cat and then to replace the resonator I'll just take it out and put in a straight pipe there but keep the rest of the exhaust system stock for now?

Thanks in advance

My exhaust:

ZZP Front SS Powerlog, ZZP 2.5" SS downpipe with cat, GMPP Exhaust.

My favorite set up :P

Removing the stock resonator may give you too much interior drone for your liking. These 3.8s like to be raspy

instead of no resonator, its not cheap but like chibi said it will help reduce some of that interior drone

Thanks for the pointers and ideas. I'm also curious and have done a search for this but I don't seem to see anyone with the SLP catback system. Any reason for this?

Can you find out what the code was that your mechanic found? There are hundreds of reasons that the CEL will come on and we may be able to help you out better then the mechanic.

I have the SLP catback system on my 05 and I like it. I also like my Dynomax that's on the 03. I LOVE the chrome tips that system came with. Only downside to Dynomax is that it isn't stainless. I painted the exhaust before I put it on the car.

Sure, I'll try to pass by there this week to get it again. Also do you think this is the reason why I would have surges when driving because of the big a$$ hole in my resonator and maybe cat is either going or gone. When I'm cruising at about let's say 100KM (60M) then slowly accelerate to 120KM (about 70M) it surges unless I give it more gas? I remember my mechanic who's actually a close friend said that the cel had to do with my sensors. I think he mentioned something about bank1 not 100% sure.

Thanks AwesomeSS. Reason I asked about the SLP system was that the price was cheaper than the Magnaflow ones and Corsas

I think for stainless they are the best bang for the buck - I think I paid just over $500 shipped.
