Default Converter replacement

I called the local auto parts store to see about getting a new catalytic converter. The only one they can get it the one that gets welded into the downpipe. I'm ok with that since the part is only $100 and the exhaust shop will put it in for $40. But it's a magnaflow converter. I'm wondering if it will still throw the P0420 code. Does anyone know?

If the Magnaflow converter is a high-flow then most likely it will throw a code. I purchased a ZZP downpipe with high-flow cat and for the first 3 weeks it didnt throw a code but after a certain amount of miles mines came on. It doesnt affect any performance though... You can get that code programmed out by puchasing a zzp pcm. I recommend getting the zzp downpipe with cat and sending zzp your old cat and they will send you a $50 off coupon which you can use towards a pcm. There are core charges on the pcms.

It doesn't say that it's high flow. Hope it's not. I am trying to sell my car and a guy was test driving it tonight and the stupid check engine light came on. Catalytic converter code came up. Scared him off. So, I'm gonna try and get the cat replaced tomorrow.

Yeah, I know it's no big deal to have it come on. But, a guy was test drive it tonight and the light came on. I've just been clearing it when it comes on. No biggie. The guy kinda freaked out about it though.

Honestly I have heard bad things about the downpipe on those. It's pretty restrictive of a piece...

Check out an actual exhaust shop, see if they can chop off and replace with an oem style cat

I replaced my downpipe/cat with a Magnaflow unit about 6 months ago and have had no problems with it setting a code.
