Default CIA, Cheap v. expensive??

Has anybody tried one of the $30 CAI's on ebay that are all over the place? It looks like a piece of mandrel bent tubing with a cone filter attached to it, a hole for the AIT Sensor and thats it.

My question is whats the difference between that and say a K&N FIPK?? The price??

the ebay ones are junk. nothing is wrong with the parts, but the design is flawed it breaths in hot engine air which hurts performance. what you need is a cold air intake. those on ebay are what we call Hot air intakes. a true cold air intake will either have a new airbox or have the filter in a location where it sucks only cold air. such as a FWI fender well intake. i have plans for building a FWI on my WWW just click it under my profile. the writeups are on page 6. i also have links to other writeups so there is more then plenty info to build what you need.

the diff in performance is amazing. very noticable.

thank you, i was hesitant about them for just that reason, it makes sense now that i think about it. It did help a ton on my GF's Cavi, one of those cheap-os gave that little 4-banger some kick, and it can now merge on the freeway w/o me praying i dont die!!lol!!

stick with something with a name brand...k&n is the best way to go...but also its the most money, you can make your own unit for fairly cheap...but you'll still have to invest in a filter thats about 50-60 bucks, and then the tubing and everything else may be about 10-20 bucks...so all in you'll have less than 100 bucks in a unit you make yourself...or you can buy the k&n one for 300 bucks, and get the guarenteed 13.7 hp and the awesome sound it makes....whooosha!!

its pretty much personal pref. coke or pepsi... but for the record im using a cheep filter from autozone and i have no flow problems at all at top RPM. so im not going to spend twice the money to have a true K&N when i can get a cheep filter for $25. my current intake system costs less then $50 in total parts... granted i spend much much more over the years testing out new ideas but to get what i have now its rather cheep in comparison to all the others out there.
