Default Check Engine Light (help)

Check engine light came on so I took my car up to auto zone to get the code read. The scanner says catalyst ineffeciancy on bank 1 or something like that and the guy that scanned it said my cat was bad. My car only has 40,000 miles on it. Could the cat already be bad or could there be another problem causing this code?

Thanks
Steven

What was the code? P0420? That's what mine was and it was the cat, but I had one of the faulty '01-'02 cats.

i think the catalyst warranty covers you on mileage, not sure about time... might call a local dealer and find out if youre still covered on the cat

I did a search on google and couldnt find anything on that catalyst warranty.
Is it longer than the 3/36,000 warranty?

You should have at least 80,000 mile or 8 yrs warranty on the cat. It should still be covered.
Mine was faulty and it was up to 120,000 miles or either 8 or 10 yrs, can't remember, but I had 108,000 and GM replaced it at no cost.

That gave me a little relief. I thought I was ganna have to throw about $400 in for that cat.
I will have to call the dealership in the morning and make sure they are going to cover it.

take it to the dealer you ahve up to like 80,000 miles on it for total replacement of the cat.
They had to do mine right after it came back home

i had power loss.
and real slugish
and when you wanted to get to speed it had to be punched to the floor to do it.
they replaced it and it was a diffrent car agian.

I took it to the dealership this morning and about 4 hours later they were calling me to tell me it was done and it was covered under warranty.

That pretty much made my day.
