alright sounds good, will i still get horsepower gains if i just take the box out and put a cone filter on the end of the stock tube? i'd have to put something in there to keep it up but other than that it seems like the same thing to me

if you don't have a heat shield it becomes a hot air intake (HAI)

They sound loud, but they hinder your performance more than the stock box.

If its anything like the 3500, which I'm pretty sure it is, because the 3500 and 3800 airbox are VERY similar...Anyway, you are right! Once you take the rubber hose and MAF sensor off, the airbox just has a few clips holding it in...

blacksheep what do you mean by it still hinders your performance? making it better? and would a heat shield make it improve my power gains compared to just hai?

mamonte, when i take the sensor off, what do I do with it then? wont it set something off in the notification area?

look into a detailed how to make your own / install of one. maybe with pictures to familiarize yourself in this first.

it seems you really need some education on how they work first

i have the basic ideas, i know that cooler air=more power so the heat shield deflects most heat from the engine provided colder air, i just dont understand what to do with the sensor or if it even matters

The sensors go back on, you just have to remove to get the airbox out easier, then you use either new piping, or the same old piping.

See how it's new piping, and you can see that my sensor plugs right back into the pipe? and then at the top the coupler is bolted back on to the MAF and everything.

i was just gonna use the same old piping, the new pipe doesnt seem totally necessary and im kinda on a budget, was there also a sensor connect to the box itself? thats what i was talking about lol sorry for the confusion, but i may have just been seeing things too

No sensor connects directly to th box, they are hooked into the stock tubing, and the MAF is just before the tubing...Like Blacksheep said, if you do change the hose, you still reconnect the sensors to the new hose, and you still use your factory MAF.

Here is a pic of my CAI set up. As you can see, I used the factory rubber hose, so the sensor stayed in the same spot. And you can also see the MAF sensor comes right after the box just like it did with the stock air box.
