Default Steering Wheel Control Wire Harness

I want to add radio controls to the steering wheel of my 2003 monte carlo ls. I pulled apart the steering wheel only to find there is no connections to add steering wheel radio controls. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I have not researched doing this mod, but I suspect you may need a different clock spring (used with things like the air bag connections) and the wiring harness that connects the button together to a connection behind the air bag (that I suspect is from the clock spring).

Not sure if anyone here has done this upgrade, if so, hopefully someone with experience can chime in.

Wrong item. The OP is not adding an aftermarket radio and wanting to keep the wheel controls functional. They are just trying to add a factory option of radio controls they currently don't have.

Default Steering Wheel Radio Control Clockspring

So, my next question then would be, could I swap the clock spring with one out of a model that does have the oem Steering Wheel Radio Controls, or is it as simple as getting a different harness that clips to all four buttons and joins them into the clock spring harness? Also, if it is as simple as swapping the clock spring, would the rest of the wires that run to the head unit need to be swapped too. I haven't pulled apart the dash to see if there is a data wire that runs from the clock spring to the radio. I would think if its there, then all I need is a different clock spring that utilizes that data wire. I would attempt this add on if the rest of the wiring is there. I would find it hard to believe gm would use different interior wire looms for different trim levels.

So it is just plug and play then? I couldn't understand why it wouldn't be. Unfortunately the buttons I purchased didn't come with the wire harness. Any thoughts on a oem part # or where I can get them?

Default Steering Wheel Controls Harness

Thanks zjerry for explaining this and providing the diagram. Im heading to a couple junkyards tomarrow to try and find this wire harness. I presume any monte carlo between 01-05 should have the same harness. If I have no luck, would a harness out of an impala steering wheel work just the same?

Any '00-'05 Monte harness will work.

I do not believe an Impala harness will work (or I wouldn't take the gamble on it if it were me).

I went to a few junkyards today. No montes. Lots of impalas but the harness is slightly different. I checkout gm parts direct and they have part no. 12450138 available, although it is described as w/o cruise.
