IIHS Says Lots of New Car Headlights in the U.S. Are Garbage
A new study of 31 U.S.-market midsize cars found that a shocking number of new cars have barely-adequate headlights.
Member's, how do you rate your factory headlights in your Monte Carlo ?
* Post if you have replacement headlights & rate/post how they are ?

Congratulations: If you own a Toyota Prius V with the Advanced Technology Package, you own the only midsize car in the U.S. equipped with "good" headlights, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). If you own any other new car? You've probably got some crappy illuminators. The IIHS released details of a new study Wednesday rating the headlights on 31 of the most popular midsize cars sold in the U.S., and the results are pretty sad.
The IIHS tested both the standard equipment and optional headlight packages on 31 different midsize cars (testing 82 headlight systems in total), with the Prius V with the optional Advanced Technology Package earning the only "good" rating of the lot. The remaining 81 headlights were scored as Acceptable, Marginal or Poor. Worst of all cars tested was the BMW 3 Series equipped with the standard halogen headlamps. The 3 Series is bumped up to a Marginal rating when equipped with optional LED lights.
The IIHS tested cars on a long straightaway as well as sharp and gradual left and right turns to get an accurate picture of headlight performance. The further the headlight beam reached in each test (at a minimum intensity of five lux), the higher it scored. Other factors like glare, and whether or not the car has automatic high beams were considered as well. You can read the full test procedure and results over on the IIHS website.
While you'd think cars equipped with LED headlights and/or corner-following lights would score higher, the IIHS found that wasn't always the case. For example, the Honda Accord's standard-equipment halogens scored better than its fancy optional LED lights.
Many of the issues the IIHS has with headlights will hopefully be solved by future technology likelaser headlights, which are designed to offer stronger, longer-reaching illumination with substantially less glare than conventional lights. Of course, it'll be a while before we see laser headlights in the U.S., thanks to an archaic law which mandates that headlights must have a simple high and low beam function. Advanced laser, LED or other headlight systems would offer a variety of automatically-controlled settings, not just "bright" and "less bright."
Perhaps this test will start a conversation about changing our the dim-witted U.S. headlight regulations to allow for significantly improved tech.
