Default Is the Xway Your Road Coarse?

There have been times I have been all the above. It is a miracle I am still alive, because I would fly up on someones bumper literally rub their bumper until the person would move aside. Nobody wanted to ride with me back then, and I don't blame them. In my youth I was super aggressive.

Today, I am a lot more causious, and calculating. I study the road, traffic movement, and then make planned, calculated, high-speed bobs & weaves.I plan my moves so as not to cut (or have someone think I'm cutting) anyone off. That the traffic is lose enough (staggered) that I can jump one, two, three lanes and do it precision, accuracy, and everyone's safety. I know that sounds stupid -- how can someone jump two or three lanes, accellerating at high speeds, and still tell me they are being safe? I'm telling you I see a totally safe line, or don't take the risk. The last thing I would EVER want, would be to hurt or cause someone to be hurt by something I did.

When traffic is tight or full, I lay back, lock in cruise control, turn on the radio and relax. When I driving hard, there is nothing on in my car - no radio, no fans (no a/c or heat), no nothing! I want 100% of my focus to be on the road, and 100% hear all the sights and sounds around me.

BUT, Have you guys noticed the Monte has three REALLY BAD blind spots. I'm taller, so the position of the rearview mirror can cause me not to see an object coming from my right side across the front of the car. Twice I have pulled out into traffic and at the last second see the object (car & a bike). The rear (over the shoulder views suck. I know, use your mirrors -- WRONG! The mirror does not pick up everything, in fact, the one spot it doesn't cover is when a car is right at the corner of your car, that spot you need to glance over your shoulder to see and have a hard time seeing because of the design of the car. One of those small bubble mirror would work, but look so ugly.

But today, if I have a passenger, I'm relaxed and riding with the flow. No crazy moves.

I drive much the same as you, Craig. You should have added an all of the above option, LOL. I usually do between 10 - 15 mph over the posted speed limit, but on occasion (like a left lane bandit) I will pass on the right, but only when someone just sits, and sits, and sits in the passing lane. Only if things are clear ahead will I pass on theright. People just don't understand that the PASSING lane is for PASSING! Pass and get over, already.
Another thing that really, really bugs the s*** out of me is people NOT going the speed limit. For example, the other day some so and so was going from 40 - 55 - 40 - 55 on this rural 2 lane I was on. Not cool when there are 2 cars behind them, both afraid to pass, and a guy on a Harley behind the 2 cars. Needless to say, once the Harley blasted them, I had to also ( I know what you all are thinking, but I just HAD to). I could see if the weather was bad or something, but this was on a beautiful 75 degree day! The wife wasn't really happy with me for going so fast, but oh well, it's not like she doesn't know how I drive, LOL. I won't say how fast I was going, but you SS owners out there can imagine how quick you have to be going to pass 3 cars from 40 mph.

I could have wrote the same paragraph you started this thread with. i love driving. it's my stress reliever rather then stress maker. but in this city during rush hours there is no room to weave so crank up the tunes and just coast at 15mph. its funny i always seem to find myself a competitor as well. someone that follows your line and tries to keep up till ya make that triple lane change to get around the dumptruck going slow as hell. it's my entertainment. and alot of people would think it's unsafe but. i'm cautious in my high speed weaving. as rediculous as that sounds.

I like the triple blink feature when you tap the turn signal lever. I always try to use it when bobbing and weaving.

Alright peoples, for everyone out there (they won't be reading this, I wouldn't think any are on here) who like riding on the interstate doing 50 in the passing lane:

MOVE OVER!!

Let me explain how the rules of the interestate works, sense you didn't learn it in drivers ed. The right lane is the driving lane, which means just that. Sometimes it is called hte slow lane. If you're going to drive slow, stay over. If you're just crusing down the interstate and not many cars around, stay to the right.

The left lane is the passing lane. And I don't mean it's for passing gas, passing time, or passing out. It's for passing CARS.

And with that, I will digress...

well i forgot to answer the question: i usually take it easy. i discovered that the guy who is usually ripping thru traffic isn't really getting their that much faster, and you really increase your chances at getting a ticket. plus, i also realized i arrived at wherever i was going (if it was a long trip) more tired and stressed. but i think that was from where i was just trying to get there faster. sometimes me and some friends will go somewhere together on back roads, ripping and tearing and having a grand 'ol time, and we always arrive at wherever laughing and enjoying ourselves... but on the interstate, there are generally too many cops and too many people willing to write your tag number down and report it.... i keep my playing to the backraods, and cruise about 4-8 mpg over the limit or with the flow of traffic when on the interstate, i keep my radio on, and enjoy the ride.

we have a couple of good "road courses" around here, being in the center of NC. we have some old back roads that are simply great for taking curves, and a few of them even feature a nice, long straight stretch with no driveways or roads connecting to it.... these are my road courses.. the ones i play around on with my friends. only we usually don't race. we usually play "follow the leader" and we all rip and tear behind that guy. then eventually somebody will pass and the fun keeps going. ah... good times.

I want to agree with you so much Cowboy and I love your dissertation, but in Cali, there is no such thing as slow lanes and passing lanes.

According to the California vehicle code, all lanes are meant for equal rate of speed.

So passing on the right lane as long as you are under or atthe posted speed, or it is safe to do so, is legal here.

Trucks and private vehicles, and vehicles over 25k lbs. must use only the right 2 lanes and cannot exceed 55 mph.

Thus the urban legend of the slow lane here.

I do realize other states have completely different rules.

Cali does not have a law that you must pull over and let a car pass if you are flashed. I realize that other states do.

We do have a bizarre law that if you are impeding more than 10 cars, you can get a ticket.

So if I am doing 64 mph in a 65 zone and keeping a line of cars from doing 65, I can get ticketed.

I've been to traffic school over a dozen times in my lifeincluding trafficschoolonline.com so I have some experience with the vehicle code.

In the city I have to go at the speed of traffic. Or better described as the crawl of traffic. Windsor's major streets are ALWAYS under construction, and always at the same time. I think our city officials get a perverse pleasure in making our lives a traffic hell.

On expressways and highways it's a different story. Most of the time, I casually work my way through traffic. Sometimes though, I feel like screaming GET OUTTA THE WAY

Just kidding.
