Why doesnt this site consider a 7th gen not a 6th gen

I was just wondering why it mattered what somebody else called it whatever they call it.

If parts for it can be had with the 00-05 Monte's then it's the same gen as those, but if they're in a class of their own when it comes to parts then it's a new gen.

That being said, I think we're correct in calling them the 7th gen Monte's

It just seems like its a standard all across all of the other gens what makes this gen different? I mean it you look back at all the gens previously (besides maybe the the 5th gens) there is a differance in almost every year. But that doesnt make each year a different gen. For instance 4th gens differences between 83-85 and 86-88:

86-88 redesigned Mirrors
87-88 has laydown Spoiler
87-88 has redesigned Rear Bumper
87-88 has redesigned Stripe Kit
86-88 have aluminum Wheels
86-88 LS have single lights instead of double

I am sure there are instances in the other gens besides this one. But these are examples I am awar of since I owned a 1987. I guess the other question then would be why dont you consider this a seperate gen if you believe in the 7th gen.

And I believe that in the second gen they changed the headlights and motor and tailights in 1977 or 1976. and the gen 2 runs from 1972 to 1976. So if we go off that the would mean that the 7th gens should then be the 9th gens thats including the there being two gens in the 80s too.

To me, I also believe the 06-07 montes are a 7th gen. They are based on the impalas, or vice versa, which were completely redesigned. Are the early 2000s impalas and the 06-09s considered the same gen? I know the impala changed a lot more than the Monte Carlo did, but the Monte still changed a lot. The changes you have talked about in the 4th gen to me are just minor changes, like the mirrors and tail lights, and such. The changes from the 6th to 7th include a lot more major changes, like a complete nose redesign, complete interior redesign, updated rear end, update suspension, new motors with the addition of the v8, which makes it one of the most powerful montes built in a LONG time. They aren't a complete redesign, but enough for me to call it a née generation.

I agree with Ben. New powertrain and accessories does not a new generation make. There would be at least a dozen generations if that were the case. Many many same parts between the 00-05 and 06-07. I'd say well over half the parts. Different parts exist between models of the same year , so that probably shouldn't matter

That was a debate on this site long before most of us joined the site. Including me. But from what I've read in the archives, it was a pretty hot topic here back in 2006 when the "new" models came out.

(Sidebar: This site dates back to 2004. Will be 6 years old in june or july.)

Basically it stemmed from people looking for help with their cars. Modding, repairing, etc. A lot of stuff doesn't work on both the 00-05, and the 06-07. Especially mods. Even some popular parts sites (like PFYC.com for example) have separate pages. One for the 00-05, and another for the 06-07.

To make things easier at the time, the forum decided to just call them 7th gens. Even though GM doesn't consider it the 7th gen. The rest of us just went along with it when we joined the site. Personally I don't care what generation you call it. I call it a Monte Carlo.

When GM was asked if they considered the 06-07 Monte Carlo a 6th or 7th gen, their answer was, "...we consider it "discontinued". Thank you for calling."

there is a little simularities of the suspention and the dog bones with the 6th and 7th gen the lower controll arms are the same for the gen's some of the rear link bars are the same thats it. because the 6th and the 7th gen is classed as a w-baody inaway do to the doors back in simular design. thats it i have driven the 6th gen and i own the 7th gen the two gens run great. and wish they come back with it.
