What should I expect?

Default What should I expect?

I'm picking up a new toy in the next few weeks, it's a 1978 Monte Carlo, with a brand new stand built 350, pushing somewhere near 350 hp, and a matching 350 tranny. If it's the stock rear end gears ( which are in the low 2's I believe ) what should I expect to run in a 1/4 mile?

What would my best option be for a rear end in the future? and with that would should I be able to expect.

Thanks guys.

Hmm. 350hp would probably be like 260-280hp to the wheels. I would guess the curb weight of your car would be around 3600lbs. With such a high gear ratio, I would put you in the high 14s in the quarter. Go with lower gears and you could probably see low 14s if not high 13s depending on the weight of the car and its contents when you run it. You will also probably see a lower than average 60ft time but a trap speed slightly higher than you would expect for the time you run.

Thanks guys, I figured the stock gears would bog it down big time. so if they are stock they will likely be my first big project, but that's ballpark for what I thought it would run, with an upgraded rear end. Thanks again fellas.

the 3rd gens arent that heavy. there more in the 3300lbs ballpark. at 350hp if it had some gearing it could run in the 13s. thats all dependent on what kinda torque it makes, stall speed, and if you can launch the car or not.

I would also guess 15's with that gearing. I'd love to see what it actually runs. There's a show on Speed Channel where they show 3 contestants a car, they get to ask 3 questions about it, then they give their best guess at the 1/4 mile time. Then the owner runs it down the track. Closest time wins. I forget what its called, but I love that show and this reminds me a little of that.

Pass time! I watch. I guess we're playin' it now. I said 15, so now you screw me by guessing 15.01. Good strategy....
