So is it the parts that wear from the stress or does the excessive heat mess something up, or both?

The transmission on these cars are already a weak point, heat is a contributing factor.

So when you add the stress and even more heat that comes from towing something, it adds to the failure possibilities.

Oh ok, I want a new truck but I dont want to sell my monte because its paid off :/ chibi do you have a truck that you can loan me lol

I was considering using my 2003 to pull a 500# trailer but after reading this thread I will not. my monte has only 23,000 + miles on it now, no need to have to start repairing an 11 year old ride. i'll keep pulling it with my 1993 Honda accord.

I doubt that pulling a small trailer once in a while with a Monte Carlo is going to make the car explode. You should see some of the tiny cars in Europe (Smart cars, Skodas, little Fords) towing utility trailers. They have these neat hitches that look like a curled up tail with the ball on top. If I needed to I'd put a hitch on my SS. Could have used it last week when I needed to transport tires and rims from my dually to the gas station. Had to make 3 trips there and 2 trips back.
