Default Was there a limited edition in 1998?

So my friend bought a 1998 Monte Carlo. He's always driven Lumina's and liked this car. Supposedly it had a blown head gasket, and he got it cheap. Turned out just to be an intake gasket issue, and he's got the car running good.

But the doors have decals on them that say "Race Day May 24, 1998 Limited Edition". There is a small 'plaque' on the passenger visor that says the same thing followed by "#10 of 20"

He can't stand having a car that "stands out". He was going to remove the lettering but then someone else told him not to because the car might be "rare".

Long story short he wants to know if this is truly a car that has any extra value. He either wants to make it a driver for himself (erase lettering) or let someone else have it that would value it as what it is.

My only role in this is that I know how to use the internet.

The car is red, so I told him if he doesn't want to stand out, he should get a car that isn't red. He didn't find that helpful.

It just looks like a normal car to me. It does have the 3800, and some body moulding/trim on the bottom. I'm guessing that's the z34 package. The lettering and plaque don't seem very superb to me, so I thought maybe it was a dealer BS sales tactic.

I googled around and couldn't find any info, so I thought that people on this forum have probably seen it all and could point us in the right direction. Any ideas?

It would be good to have some photo's to reference. They did have a Brickyard pace car back in 1994, and then in 95,96 they was a Z-Sport edition.
I am not familiar with others but I recall seeing something once. I will check on it.

I took a few today when I went by his house when he called. Not sure how to get them up here but I'll work on it.

Okay if you want to post photo's on this in the tab above next to the face is a rectangle with a small mountain at the bottom inside of it click on that and it will take to to where you can select the photo's select browse your device, upload from device and you are good to go.

On the Date May 24 1998 there were to Races the Indy 500, Indianapolis, IN, and the Coke 600 in Charlotte,NC. The pace car edition for the Indy 500 was a blue corvette.

So that would make the pace car a logical fit for the Coke 600 in Charlotte, NC
I found a couple of photo's for comparison. But it is for the Brickyard 400.

Yeah, that's what I'd expect a special edition to look like. This one is much less obvious. Going to try to add the pictures below.

One thing this car has though is a Body Kit and rear spoiler.
The Body kit is by Razzi which is nearly a $1800.00 item and the spoiler is also a good one probably $350.00 or more.
So that indicates it is a high dollar limited edition.
The title or a CarFax report would tell you a little about the ?Car and where it came from.

I didn't realize carfax cost $40! I doubt he'll go for that, but maybe. It may not even have that info on it...

It also has this little thing on the mirror (i thought it was kind of chintzy)

Save your money, Carfax has to be one of the most deceitful scams going, you will notice Carfax reports start out by saying
" no reports received by Carfax", of course no one is going to report that their car has been damaged, it was a very successful
sales scam, any other info on car report can be had by anyone.

blueridge, I think it's safe to say that this Z34 isn't any genuine special edition. After all, why would it say "Race Day" without naming the actual race?!?
So the door lettering and visor plaque can go away.

But the Razzi body kit and rear spoiler are desirable items for a sporty Monte Carlo, if your friend likes the style. (I do.)

That is an excellent point that I had not considered.
If this were a “sanctioned” edition, the race would have been named specifically. This is much more likely a dealer sales tactic.

so it carries no real collectibility. The car itself has some nice options though.

thanks for the insight!
