Starter? Passlock? Dead Monte!!
Hey guys, I was on my way home tonight and the (security) light came on. I didn't think much of it until right after I shut the engine off to go in and buy a Coke and a Mega millions ticket. When I tried to start my new baby up I got nothin. All the lights came on and there was no dimming usually associated with a dead battery so I was thinking Starter, but after cussing out the service dept I read the owners manual to calm down. I read the part about the passlock system and so I tried unlocking the doors with the fob a few hundred times and it started but VERY roughly.
So here I am not knowing what was the reason it died or the reason it started is. The dealer I got it from is 65 miles from my house so I am kinda **** outa luck there. Im gonna try to start it in the AM to go to work and probably get stuck.
Any ideas and where is the starter on this monkey 02 SS so I can whack it with a hammer if need be.

the starter is underneath the car. i don't think that will help your problems much. disconnect the battery for 30 mins (not 28, not 29, 30 mins). that'll reset everything and you shoudl be good to go.
She started this morning ok but I did notice that the interior map light was doing a slow strobe. Was that from me putting to much stress on the electrical system with the heat and defogger?
If you go to start the car and it doesn't start and the Security light turns on, leave the key in the ignition at the ON position for 10 minutes and then it should start. If this is the case you have a faulty passlock system.

Waiting 'til after the first of the year then I'm going to get my ignition cylinder replaced.
The security light did come on the other day while I was driving after it pulled it's no start. It went away after I turned it off and so far has stayed away. That's the first time I've seen it while driving. I hope it stays away, I don't like lights on my dash that don't belong there.
Im pretty sure you guys are right. When the car wouldn't start before it was flashing SECURITY and BATTERY like you said. The weird part is that the SECURITY light came on before i shut the engine off and went into the store. I didnt lock the car at the store so maybe that was what tripped it.
I just bought the car 4 days ago from a Chevy Dealer so im kinda glad these things keep coming up. Im going back Thursday night to have it looked at.
Thank you guys for all your help.

It's always VERY frustrating when electrical/computerized stuff gets glitchy.
I always imagine little imps, with lighting bolt horns on their heads, taunting me when that kinda stuff happens.

I researched the passlock issue quite a bit when mine went bad. Having the ignition cylinder replaced is a bit expensive and I read several people had the problem happen again a few months later. I also read that having new keys cut from the dealer fixed the issue, but again many people reported the issue reoccurred a few months later. Same with having the passlock sensor and BCM replaced, after all my research I only found one permanent solution. The best solution I have found is to bypass the passlock system altogether. There are 2 methods, one requires taking the dash off, snipping a wire, measuring the resistance with a multimeter, soldering a resistor to the wire and wallah, passlock system fixed. This is the method I went with because I already had all the tools and resistors so it cost me nothing, and it took me 3-4 hours to do...and this was my first time taking a dash out of anything. If you don't have a multimeter or soldering iron or just don't want to take your dash out yourself I recommend the other method. The other method is to goto a place that installs remote starters and have them install the passlock bypass module that they would install with a remote start, but this may cost $100+ including labor, but still cheaper than a new ignition module which runs $400+.
This passlock issue is unbelievabley common with Monte Carlo's and Impala's, look at this, it's rediculous and should be a recall.

And this is just the list for 02 Impalas...

Well I got stuck again with a non starting Monte. I may have figured out the trigger for my Passlock issue. It has only happened when I get out of the car and dont use the Key Fob. Now im gonna lock the car all the time with the Fob and just cross my fingers.
BIG THANK YOU to Nocturnx and Dustybird3 for the 10min trick.
It kinda sucks to buy a car two weeks ago and already be playing ignition roulette. I got rid of my Crown Vic because it was unreliable and now I have a car that wont start because it thinks im trying to steal it. (I cant let you do that Dave)
Damn all these computers and solenoids and transistors and micro chips. You cant fix the car without a degree from MIT now. I knew it was bad when I had my SHO but this is just crazy....

It seems that when I start seeing the security light for a split second eitherupon starting or turning the key off, it's not long 'til it "forgets" I AM the owner and not a thief. I jokingly say my security is too good.
IALWAYS lock my door with the FOB, that way I can't lock my keys inside
. I also always use it to unlock the door so I don't get anymore scratches (some there from PO) from other keys bumping it.
