So as most people know here, I am sraping this 96 Monte Carlo because of the squirrel that ate the wiring and made the nest.

I have had a few requests from people from parts.

I got that stuff off and my neighbour approached me to say the catalytic converter is worth some good cash because of the precious metals inside.

Anyone have an idea what it's worth to remove and sell as scrap?

I don't know for sure, but I have seen people brag about getting $100 for it. There are some truly precious metals in there, so it's worth a shot to get as much as possible for it. I would put it on e-bay with a "buy it now" option of $200 and a "reserve" of $199 just to see what happens.

 

unless it's in massive amount(which will be suspicious) it is not most of the time your lucky if you get $20

I got $50 for the Cat of my 1992 5.0 Trans Am last fall, don't know what a 98 MC is worth but anything is better than nothing...

 

i think platium is the metal inside the cat. i didn't know they worth that much money now i know why when i go to the junk yard all the vehicles are missing the cat converter.

 

I got $90 for the cat in my old bonneville which payed for the new highflow one I put in and my boss gave me $60 for the one in my monte. The prices always vary week to week and by car as well. Truck cats seem to be worth the most. I work at a garage and people come around all the time wanting to buy cats and my boss holds out until the prices go up. I think he made almost a grand on the last batch of cats, which didn't consist of too many of them.

I know a few years ago people we going around parking lots and dealerships with a cordless saws all and cutting cats out of trucks and suv's. I don't think they ever did get caught

 

I've heard that cutting up the cat for the precious metals is more trouble than it's worth. But you can try the ebay thing previously mentioned. If someone is willing to buy it off of you, take the money. The cat was only going to go to the scrap heap anyway.

 

to sell the cat for precious metals is really no work at all.

Step one: remove cat from Car. (this could be part of another process - say a high flow cat install or other exhuast work)
Step two: drive to a metal recycler and ask them what they will give you for it.
Step three: if they offer enough cash take the money.
Step four: drive away.



It is true the prices change day to day, when I took mine off they were going about $25, 9 months later I wanted it out of my garage and took $50, some guys here have been paid over $100. There was a time that thiefs would take a cordless sawsall and steal them from parked cars, the older GM Trucks as I remember had more metal then most are were the main target.

 

theyre worth money. especially if youre just scrapping the car. i know a guy who tows scrap cars as side work and thats the first thing he does is cut the cat off before he scraps the car. hes got a pyramid of them. calls it his retirement fund. they actually had a news report on this topic, because people were coming out of stores and finding that someone pulled into the lot with a sawzall and cut their cat off. i believe it was happening with the toyota sequia or what not.
