IF your LS is a 2006 model, You will not have On-star
IF your LS is a 2007 model, you should have on-star
It was standard equipment in 2007

Im guessing onstar is a dealer option. When the car was originally ordered by the dealership, since it was a LS maybe they thought onstar wasnt worth the extra few bucks to have one with it shipped?

The fact it was a rental may be the reason you don't have it in your car. Since the Onstar would have to be registered in the rental agency's name, the renters would be anonymous to the Onstar operators. People tend to become smart asses when they know they're anonymousand don't have to pay a monthly fee for the service.

Or maybe the rental agency had a problem in the past with people stealing the Onstar units, and decided not to have them installed anymore.

If you get Onstar installed in your car, be sure it's the new digital system and not the older analog system. My car came with the analog system installed from the factory. The dealership told me if I wanted to activate the Onstar, it would have to be upgraded to digital. Since Onstar is in the process of phasing out the analog system.

Lol.. I kinda dislike the onstar system in my monte. A cell phone allows me to do the same thing. My 06 LT has it.
