I'll second the 50mm. They're cheap at 95-110$ and They're really good for the money. Biggest thing when it comes to lenses is what your planning on doing and what your going to use the camera for.
Here's what my brother took with my T1i and the cheap 50mm. There was a cheap CPL on it also.. so it kinda helped some but not really.
Off the camera, no post processing. There's some minor flair but that would be fixed in post.
My best advice.. get used to the camera, rent lenses and go out and take pictures. there's a lot to be learned and settings to figure out.

I've gotten used to it already! Alot of the functions are generally the same from my old rebel, and anything I don't know about it has definitions on screen to make it easier to understand. Only thing I have trouble with is the flash, it seems to pause for long periods of time on the settings I had on. I thought it was a little odd but I haven't had a chance to really play in manual settings.

That's an interesting shot with the fixed 50mm lens, I've never wanted one really, saw no need for them, but that is a nice contrasting shot.
A fixed or "prime" lens will always be sharper image quality wise. They have their pluses and minuses. I'm able to move around a lot and what I do a lot of is stationary pictures So the fixed lens works for me. Zoom's are good and have their uses and are very suitable for what their used for.
