Cool article.

Too bad we can't (or couldn't) get similar horsepower in a street Monte Carlo.

That comparison was made in 2002 with what appears to be the 2002 Dale Earnhardt edition Monte SS. Those numbers are comparing the naturally aspirated 3800 V6, with all the restrictive elements installed by the factory, to the V8 racing engine/tranny which uses racing fuel. The street Monte still put out some respectable numbers for the time, considering. I would like to see the 2007 "Monte Carlo" race car compared to the 2007 Monte Carlo SS V8 street version.

The horsepower would still be widely different, but the numbers would be greatly different then what the 2002 street Monte put out.

Of course we all know that the race car isn't made by GM anymore. That's the reason I put "Monte Carlo" in quotes. Unfortunately, they're all generic race cars now. The body isn't even shaped like the real car anymore. I believe the 2007 cars would be close enough in shape to compare though. That's one thing the 2000+ Montes had against the Fords and Mopars. The real Monte was actually shaped very similar to the race car.

Okay, I'm rambling now.

Bottom line:

Compare the 2007Monte Carlo V8 SS to the race car.

theres no comparison... two cars for two seperate purposes.

if it was me in a race, i'd keep it wound up around 110 or so and just wait for the race car to run out of fuel

Once you gut the street monte and put in a dual turbo you should have no problems running with the big dogs until you hit top end. Our cars aren't that aerodynamic.

But wasn't the street Monte sharing parts with the Nascar Monte selling points of the '00-07 Montes?

Like the deck lid and some other body panels.

I know I've seen this in the Monte Carlo literature I've collected.

I don't know about sharing body panels. But you're right about the shape being a selling point.
The 2000+ Montes were shaped almost exactly the same as the race car. I found it funny to see the Ford and Mopar racecars shaped like a Monte Carlo.

2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Review

Style matters.

[:-]
Walkaround
Chevrolet says Monte Carlo buyers usually cite styling as a major influence on their purchasing decision. And, certainly, nothing else looks like a Monte Carlo. The Monte's sharply creased quarters and thick rear roof pillars represent a design heritage now 38 years old. At the same time, the current model is as modern as the latest computer simulation, refined in the wind tunnel for maximum stability with minimal drag.
