What Really Saves Gas? And How Much?
By Philip Reed and Mike Hudson, News Editor

With gas prices so high, the media is awash with lists of gas-saving tips. Well how's this for a tip? If you listen to us, you can see hybrid-type savings without having to buy a new car.
By changing your driving habits you can improve fuel economy up to 37 percent right away (depending on how you drive). Combine several tips and perform routine maintenance and you will save real dollars, not just pennies.
A miracle? All we did was take several of the most common tips out there and put them to the test over a remote 55-mile route in the high desert of California. Some of them worked like a charm. Some of them didn't work at all. We'll give you the breakdown.
These tests were done under real-world conditions — not in a government lab somewhere. Our results can be matched by anyone — even you.
The wonderful part about what we found is that improving your car's mileage is just a matter of changing your habits. Stack a few of these winners together and we'll bet that you'll see a substantial savings at the pump — without the need for a new car.

How To Read A Tire
Everything You Need To Know — Your Sidewall Has It
The side of your tire — known as the sidewall — contains all of the information you need to know about your tire. Whether your tire comes from Goodyear or some other manufacturer, all tires are required to show thisinformation.
The side of your tire — known as the sidewall — contains all of the information you need to know about your tire. Whether your tire comes from Goodyear or some other manufacturer, all tires are required to show thisinformation.
For examples of sidewall abbreviations, click here
Tire Type defines the proper use of the tire. For example, the “P†on the tire shown here means that this is a passenger car tire. If the tire had an “LT†designation, the tire would be for a lighttruck.
Tire Width is the width of the tire measured in millimeters from sidewall to sidewall. This tire width is 215 millimeters.
Aspect Ratio is the ratio of the height of the tire's cross-section to its width. On our example, 65 means that the height is equal to 65% of the tire's width.
Construction tells you how the layers of the tire were put together. The “R†stands for Radial which means the layers run radially across the tire. A “B†stands for bias construction which means that the layers rundiagonally.
Wheel Diameter is the width of the wheel from one end to the other. The diameter of this wheel is 15inches.
Load Index indicates the maximum load in pounds that the tire can support when properly inflated. You'll also find the maximum load elsewhere on the tire sidewall, both in pounds andkilograms.
Speed Rating tells you the maximum service speed for a tire. “H†means that the tire has a maximum service speed of 130 mph. This rating relates only to tire speed capability and is NOT a recommendation to exceed legally posted speedlimits. Speed Rating Chart
DOT means that the tire complies with all applicable safety standards established by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Next to this is a tire identification or serial number — a combination of numbers and letters up to 12digits.
UTQG stands for Uniform Tire Quality Grading, a rating system developed by DOT. For more information on UTQG, continuehere.

RE: Improve Fuel Economy up to 37% ?
Great info Mr Space
I use my cruise control all the time.
The way I do is
Since you cant turn on the cruise control until 25 mph
I easy up to that point. Then turn cruise control on. I let it do the work for me
unless if im going up hill most of the time the avg rpm from 25 mph to 60 mph is
around 1800.
As far as tire pressures go. I keep mine between 30 to 32 psi all year round

RE: Improve Fuel Economy up to 37% ?
Thanks `Michael ~Mrrench~,
I'm doing the same thing that you are doing. Don't want to, but the cost of
everything is forcing me to. I still get on `it, & kick it down every time
I hit the interstate ramps. *Got 2 keep the carbon blown `out : )
My Beach Gang friends say that I'm driving like my Grandfather : )
But, we just kick up the tunes, & cruise : )
What's your average MPG on your LTZ ?
Thanks, `Space

Space
I dont get that much of a chance to get on the interstate
Every now and then we go and see our son in Pa
Most of the time the car is used to go to work
Which is 3 miles from home
As of today the avg mpg is 20.4 and dropping
