Thinkin about trying to get ahold of a either a 700r tranny or a 400 turbo... which u think better...
i plan on putting a 3/4 racing cam, getting the car bored to 60 over, and possibly getting spherical (aka hemi) piston heads into it. Also, i need to get ahold of some 3:73 gears for the azz end of my car, so if anyone has some or knows where i can get some relatively cheap itd be great. Oh and i have come to find out that i might have a slight rear driver side axle leak, so if anyone knows where i can get a pre assembled 3:73 posi rear end, that would be great too

This is of great intreast for me right now. If i can get the pruse from the wife and ge tthe cash from the truck back i have a choice to make. A 78 monte carlo (i have onwned 8) OR a 8? Malibu. that needs to be completly redone. but is in excelent shape OTHER then needing a frame and front clip. It was hit in the front end at 30MPH the old ladydriving hit one of the concret safty walls . So they cut the front end off the car in hopes to just part it out as the guy i am talking to has a 8? camino.
So the motor and tranny are gone the rear end is there but not sure im going to keep it .
from the fire wall back is so straight that even in the dark Burgondy the car is it looks straight in the sun light. and no scrathces etc... a few minor dents but that is it.
So i need some help with the Drive train and figureing out some thing to put in to it.
350 Motor or 400 small block or even a big block not real sure.
tranny not sure what i want to get in to it. I want a automatic but might go stick.
and thought of going with the typical 9" but not sure on it either.
end product will be for the son and in his years of the end of high school. This will take the place fo the 49 Ford that we had for him.

Isn't the 700R really a 700R4, a 4 speed tranny? My drag racing co-workers are using a TH350 with their small blocks, in fact I have a co-worker with a Chevy big block in a jeep, 454 bored and stroked to 596, running a TH350. Dana 60's front and back, but still the TH350 holds up to the strain. Everyone tells me that is a strong tranny if it's built right.

if youre going to have a street car, definately get a 700r4. after you can destroy that, get a 400.
reasons to try a 700r4 first
reason #1 the 700r4 is a 4speed, with a lower first gear and an overdrive, you may not have near the need for new rear end gears to help launch. if you put in some lower gear, how fast will your engine be turning when yer goin 60mph? 3000rpm? with a 700r4 that would be reduced to 2100rpm.
heres the ratios

400 2.48 1.48 1.00
700 3.06 1.62 1.00 0.70
reason #2 i dont know how much power either trans. eats, but i've heard the 400 uses more power than the 700
reason #3 i dont know how much they weigh, but i'm sure a 400 is heavier than a 700
three reason why your car will go faster with a 700r4 (unless you break it)
