Default "How do I properly read a temp gauge?"

Quick question for you... How do I properly read my temperature gauge?... The car seems to run best when I'm at the quarter position... In traffic it will always go to the halfway position, and seems to be more sluggish... I guess my question is, what is the normal temp position suppose to be?... Could it be a I need to change out my themastat?... What are the normal readings on your cars... Thanks,

Crusader SS; I am 99% sure that the middle of our temp gauge is normal operating temperature. There is no linear sweep of the needle anymore. When your gauge reads at about the quarter mark, it is not quite heated up yet, but it's on the way. Good luck.

Thanks MillerMonteSS... Do you find that the middle position gives you the best performance or is it just slighly before that point?...

I almost always have the most performance while I'm still cold. I don't know why.

i find the cooler mine is the better it runs as far as power, i think around 180 is the temperature to make the engine run for the best efficiency

Your 195 is the halfway point, 2 notches past that and your fans will kick on. All perfectly normal.

That quarter mark that you are talking about is what my car runs at 100% of the time because I have a 180° thermo and reset fan temps

Thanks for the info... If I go to a 180 degree thermo will I need to tune the PCM?... Or is it just a question of slapping it in?... Thanks,

Your car will take to a 180 thermo fine, but in traffic it will still climb higher because your fan points aren't changed.

Thanks... I'm going to install the 180 and find someone to tune my fan settings...

Just remember your heater won't be as great in the winter time
