If im not mistaken, if the 8th digit of the vin is a G then its a real SS. Also if it doesnt have chrome trim IE around the windshield and doors and other glasses then it could be a true SS. I think the only for sure way to tell though is the VIN.

Yes the 8th digit of the VIN must be a G in order to be a SS.
There are no easy emblems to identify interior wise and most that are can be easily cloned.
I can't recall if the 84 models had the same steering wheel as 85s and up that that has the SS horn button. But again that's easy to change too.
All 83 and 84s were either white or blue so at least being white you are possibly dealing with a true SS

The price is up to you. I know in my opinion just about any vehicle that runs bad drives is worth at least 1k lol.
There aren't many 25+ year old cars that don't need some work. Good news is parts are relatively easy to come by and the engine stuff is pretty basic too.

I would agree that the price is up to you. Take into consideration like Aerocoupe86 mentioned that for the age of the car if it doesn't need a total restoration then your doing good. Unless your going for a Factory Restoration then I wouldn't worry to much about a non original motor. I have decided though that my next Monte I want it to be an 87 or 88 preferably all original and white in color. Like others said, if it runs its at least worth 1k and as plentiful as the aftermarket has got for the 4th gen Monte you have a huge amount of resto parts available to go back original or just to get it where you want it.

Me personally I would stick with the 350. However a 396 would be interesting. Im not knocking big blocks beleve me, I would just focus on the body and getting it like you want it then if you decide the 350 isn't enough for you you can always drop the 396 in that nice new body!
