Home made CAI
Well I'm not sure if those goes in body or intake so I'll just ask here...
Me and my mechanic friend/mentor are planning on building a CAI for mah monte, our plan is to make a new filter box that's smoother, have the air enter from the top of the box, then use weather stripping and vacuum hose to direct the air flow to the center of the hood. Then make a fiberglass scoop on the front center of the hood. Sound slike a good plan to us, but im wondering if you guys might have anything to say about it |
home made CAI....
....Just be sure to leave room for the MAF sensor in the bottom
of the air box and remember to make a hole for the IAT Sensor to fit into. Keep in mind the upper radiator hose Clamp. Make sure that it doesn't hamper the air box install. Try to keep the appearance neat and professional looking. Check your hood clearances. That's my two cents worth....... |
have you considered making a fenderwell intake? seems less complicated than what you are doing. you just need some piping (or flexible hose) and a filter and run it down into the fenderwell where there is plenty of cool air. inexpensive and effective.

Well I'm not really going for easy on this one lol
I've never seen a monte carlo with a hood scoop that actualy served a purpose, although I'm sure theres plenty on here. Also would'nt the hood scoop help force air into the engine more so then an intake below the car or in the fender well? |
Go to MPD1.com and look at their ram air hoods/ CAI setup. Maybe that will help you to see a vsual of what you need to make.

exactly what i was trying to explain lol, http://mpd1.com/content/mc_ramair2000_big.html
although instead of the hexagon shape i was thinking have a U formed to help direct the air flow the smoother it is the better the aerodynamics |
Hi `Matt, That's a sweet set up & a SuperSuper Sweet Yellow Monte 4-Sure. Thanks for posting the link & infor on what you are attempting 2 do...Hope you can take step by step pic's and share  What  Lol, it would be `sweet 2 : ) lol Wish you good luck on gett'in it the way U want it 2 `be. Keep us updated `ok http://mpd1.com/picts_monte/monte_ramair2000_3big.jpghttp://mpd1.com/picts_monte/monte_ramair2000_4big.jpg  I really like that `Monte & the scope : ) WoW Make your Monte~> yours `Matt It's your time & $'s Good Luck :) |
Holy cow, that yellow monte looks awesome!

pick up a tigg welder and some sheets of aluminum, have at it.
then take um down to a local sign shop and have them engrave some custon stuff in there. i dont see the point of the box unless its 1 insulated 2 keeps the heat out. you dont want to make a green house intake for sure. |
alright well i've figured out waht im gonna be doing now, just tryin to find some local places to get cheap fiberglass. I was wondering how well the fiberglass would blend with the hood, could i just sand it smooth or would the entire scoop need to be covered in bondo?

For what its worth- fiberglass needs some sort of body filler to smooth the edge- you're going to have a hump going from the hood up to the fiberglass layer that needs smoothed out if you want it to blend in. However, from what I've seen- fiberglass stuff on a metal hood w/ bondo tends to crack. IMO the hood is too big and flexible and the fiberglass flexes differently than the thin sheet metal does- so the interface material (body filler) is put under a lot of strain. |

lol, not everybody has the access to a $1500 welding machine- not to mention the skill to use it.
autozone and walmart both carry fiberglass matte and resin. You could also go to a local paint/body shop supply store. Luckily I havent started any real work, right now the hood is removed, and ive been making card board mockups of what i want the scoop to look like. Once i get it all done I'll start a new thread documenting it all, and yes, i've been taking plenty of pictures |
BAHAHAHAHAHA maybe I'll do something like this

alright well today i made the scoop, cut the hole in the hood, and mounted it. Tomorrow im gonna bondo it, and if time permits hopefully get it painted. I love the fact that auto stores have spray paint that perfectly matches my car :)
|
lets get some progress shots.
|
when its all done ill post pics form the whole process, each pic is like 1980x1600 and i really dont feel like scaling em down right now
|
Alright fiber glass and bondo are done, jsut gotta sand it down a bit more then paint, once i finish i got about 50 pics of the building process and a video fo the first test drive to be posted
