Check the fluid to see if it's low.

Was the car warmed up or cold? If cold then it may just be a flow issue in which until the fluid is warm it won't engage the transmission.

sounds like its low on fluid or the stall converter is bad or it has lack of fluid which will call the friction disc to slip and burn up

you cant check the torque converter fluid by the dip stick ,also if you dont check it how the dip stick tells you to it could be a bad reading, hot at ilde or cold could be either one, also a lot of people when the do maintance changing the tranny fluid they only change the pan fluid, i always have both changed it cost more and uses alot more tranny fluid but it insures you a complete transmission fluid change
