heat and a/c

when I put on the heat floor on my car I hear the a/c click on,if I move it 1 click to the left so its heat/floor mix the compressor goes off..is this normal?
will be using more gas while a/c is on..

I believe they will kick the compressor on when the defroster is on too.
So of the newer cars now have the Snowflake on the button when that is pushed the AC comes on for the cooling. I haven't read the manual again lately but they go over it all in there too.
