Fact or Rumor
ok so ever since i bought my monte...which its only been a mth...ive been hearing some of the same things from diff ppl......im told that chevy's go bad shortly after 100k...mostly impalas and MC's...now ofcourse no1 went into detail about what actually supposedly goes wrong...but this is my 1st amercian car...and now ima lil scared...does anyone know if this is true...and also does anyone have a MC that over 100k and ifso whats the update on ur car
the engien on mine blew away at 168k miles, the tranny exploded at 185k. so they will last a bit you just gotta take care of them and make very sure to change fluids on a regular basis
not chevy's go bad, the 3.1's and the 3.4's blow their intake gaskets is probably what he's refering to, so if you have a 3.8 no issues, if you have the 3.1 or the 3.4 you might want to check into seing if the gaskets have been replaced for the newer design ones with the metal inserts in them
I had a 98 Grand Prix GTP that had over 117K on it and I never had one problem with it ever. My next door neighbor just sold his 97 GTP and it had over 180K on it with no problems. Just maintain it and you should do fine.
gtp's are 3.8's no problems with those, and the 3.1 problem i dont think started till 97 or something like that...its whenever they switched to dexcool in the gm engines

about when did they change that, I have a 2005 with the 3400 do you know what gaskets they used on the 05 3400?
Thanks,
Mike.
my monte is at 130k mi hasnt gone 'bad' yet, it needed the intake gaskets when i got it but otherwise its been pretty good. imo there are less and less of the 3.4 intakes leaking out there currently, i think the old style gaskets have vurtually all failed now and youre seeing cars with better gaskets installed, or cars new enough to of had better gaskets originally.
now recently i bought myself another chevy, 91 k1500 5.7 4wd, with 314,362 miles. now it wasnt 'bad', but it did smell pretty rotten untill some much needed cleaning.
