In a car you are not sure about make sure you get gas at a 1/4 tank. lol. My Camaro would do this too/read 1/8 of a tank less then was in there. It is just something you have to get used to and gauge it cautiously. Also what helps is if when you fill up and take note of your amount of gas used and miles til empty. It has saved me a few times in all my cars.

Probably a bad stepper motor. There's a few places that you can send it to for repair, BBEngineer is one.
Might as well have all the motors changed while it's out. They're prone to fail anyways - so I'd tackle that before I start replacing the fuel level sender.

My old van did this and it was the sending unit in the tank. I was a 99 so i am sure its a similar GM part. I think the stepper motor issue the gauge jumps back and forth and the sending unit the gauge kinda floats back and forth. Maybe someone else can confirm this.

It is more than likely your fuel sending unit. I recommed you replace the sending unit and fuel pump at the sametime, as the fuel pump probably isn't THAT far behind failing.
Running the tank to E is not the cause of this problem, it's a part that's gone bad. Very common on late 90's early 00' GM vehicles.
