For us rookies what does DOD stand for?

 

Displacement on Demand or Active Fuel Management. It's when the v8 shuts off half the cylinders under low load conditions to save MPG

 

Thanks - have only owned this car for a couple months and did not know this motor performed this way, and do not like it - would love to re-program it so that it’s V8 only - what’s my options?

 

Know anyone with HPTuners? It's $100 for the 2 credits and takes barely any time at all.

Or you can research some handheld tuners and see if they can shut it off. Or you can get your car dyno/street tuned from a speed shop and request it.

Guys I discovered that driving in “3rd” gear the engine stays in the V8 mod. So this raises some questions: does this make sense, is this a good idea to drive in 3rd gear all the time (I’m only doing this in my small town), what can happen to the trany by doing this?

 

Really?! I drive around town in 3rd because I was always told overdrive is for the freeway only (at least I remember my dad telling me that. He knows a bit about cars so I believed him). But that is how I drive my car because I don't really even take it on the freeway. How can you tell the difference that its really working?

 

I would leave it in D. No sense fighting with that stuff until you get rid of the DOD with a tune.

 

You need to get a feel for what the sensation is like going into 4 cyl mode. Id take it out on a higher speed road like a highway, use overdrive and keep an eye on rpm to watch for / feel for activation once you achieve a steady state speed. May be an exhaust tone change if its quiet enough out/ you can hear any exhaust sound at all.

There's nothing obvious (like a light on the dashboard) or anything - at least there wasnt on my GP. But once you're familiar with the before/ after feel, it's apparent when you're looking out for it.

I do wonder though- is it even worth it to you to deactivate it if you aren't already aware of it / frustrated by it / having issues related to it? Usually the people that are gung ho to get rid of it are those already opposed to it (ie just put on a louder aftermarket exhaust and can't stand the 'Huey coming in for a landing' helicopter chop on the highway).

 

Nothing bad will happen. The OD gear is just for improving fuel economy by lowering engine rpm at low load / high vehicle speed operation. The car will be fine, especially just driving around town.
