Default This car is HOT!!!

My 01 SS caught fire on Saturday. It was an engine fire that ended up inside melting almost everything. I was driving it when the fire started, and I am ok, no burns or injuries.

I changed my oil and oil filter, and flushed the coolant from the entire system.I know this could be a possible cause, but I highly doubt it because I did not spill anything in the engine compartment. After everything was tightened up and the fluids were filled, all tools removed from the engine bay, I took it out for a routine test drive, around 3 miles total with speeds ranging from 30 mph up to around 100 mph. During that test drive all accelerations and decelerations were long and smooth.

I was wondering if anyone has any idea of how it might have started, I lost throttle first, then brakes, then the engine shut down. I had to throw it in park to slow and eventually stop. I had GM take care of the latest recall last year, but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Ill post pictures soon, they are all on my phone at the moment.

I started to tear it apart, and will most likely turn it into a dedicated race car since insurance wont cover the damages.

Do you have any modifications done to the car? The only way I could really see an engine fire happening is because of fuel. Perhaps a leaking fuel line? If you lost throttle, then brakes, in that area is a giant wire with a huge caution fuel line sticker on it.

Only modifications so far have been to suspension.

That is harsh! If you had the latest oil fire recall done, I'm not sure. One of the things a "fire investigator" is trained to do is find the origin/source of the fire.

As Chibi said, maybe something with a fuel leak?? It's tough to say. At least you are safe.

This is making me wonder if I should mount a fire extinguisher in my car (I had to have one IN the car for the Monte Nats).

Sorry to hear about your car going up like that. That had to be scarey as hell. Glad you're okay.

It sounds fuel related to me too. If it went up that quickly, there had to be a fuel leak somewhere. Good Luck with the build of your new race car. Sorry the build had to start because of this.
