my friend has an 86 monte auto with a 305. He called me today and said he blew the trans. I haven't been able to see the car personally yet and diagnose the problem. He said it's a 3speed, so I'm thinking turbo400 but I'm just guessing.

So I'm entertaining two ideas, finding a replacement or doing a 5 speed conversion like he wants to.

So what I'm wondering is, what trans does this car have stock, and what kind of price in parts and difficulty am I looking at to do a stick conversion?

My '86 LS has the metric 2004R transmission in it.

If your friend's Monte is the SC version it's probably got a 350 turbo in it as long as it's the stock transmission?

 

I have an 86 with a 200C 3 speed (lock-up) trans. They call these disposable. No one will bother to rebuild them. I am replacing mine with a 200-4R (4 speed overdrive w/lock-up). Do some research to see what is in his car.

 

Im gonna check it out in person tomorow. How should I go about identifying it?

 

stock its prob the 200-r4. i would do a t-5 convert.hte kit for the convert is around 500 bucks not including trans. go to this place. itz awesome.dixie. i would do that man. the t-5 is the same trans in firebirds and camaros and other g-body cars. im lookin into the same thing on my 85 monte.

 

T-5 would be a great transmission for this car especially if you plan to mod the engine.
