Unfortunately since it's a DOHC there isn't THAT much you can do to it easily. And with it's limited production run, no real people wanted to spend the time to R&D on that engine.

i think my cat may be on its way out. every so often it is realllly hard to start. and it will start to crank but as soon as it starts to fire up it coughs really loud and i smell a sulfer-ish smell. and sometimes it feels like its only running on 3 cylinders. and the other day it backfired while i was driving, as soon as i let off the gas it backfired.

Yeah stock for stock LQ1>L36. I have walked 3800 GPs and montes a few times. I fall behind until about 50 then just destroy from then on. I think if you got your car running better you will be surprised how much quicker it is. Thats your first place to start before worrying about aftermarket.
That being said, there isnt much aftermarket available for the LQ1. I have an intake, exhaust and tune and there isnt much more you can do.

yeah i think my car could benefit from new plugs and wires. but idk why it would be backfiring and acting crazy. im gonna try to get my uncle to hook it up to his scanner and see what codes its throwing.
