Like the title says, problems with my shifter. I got up yesterday to go to work and everything was ok then when I got off I went to my car started and tried to shift out of park but couldn't. I took off the console cover and pushed the shifter and noticed that the shifter was stuck by a little arm that prevented it from going to any gear from park. I know these cars come with a lock to prevent it from shifting if you don't step on the brakes. I clipped off the arm and was able to shift and drive it home. This morning I shifted smoothly but when I tried to put it in park I couldn't so I took off the clip from the shifter handle and took it off, for some reason I was able to push the button down and shift it to park in order to for me to get my keys out of the ignition. I would like to know if you guys know the name of the part that needs to be replaced. I know that when you hit the brakes you should hear a click but I didn't, I used to and all of a sudden nothing. Please help as I am getting frustrated trying to locate a part name for this. I also plan to change my shifter handleto an aftermarket shifter handlecause for some reason it is not properly working.

Thanks that will help alot. I was searching the net and found out there is some trans/brake interlock switch or something. Do you anything about that and where can I get that switch.

 

i know theres a brake light switch that when you put pressure on the brake,s your brake lights come on... but the clip doesn't work based on the brake lights being on, it works simply because of the brakes being pushed right?

 

Actually I am just going to bypass the solenoid which has two arms that prevent it from shifting, I just now need to buy a push down shifter since mine can no longer push it far enough to go from reverse to park, I am able to do it by hand so I know nothing else is wrong.

 

Update: I removed that interlock system, all I had to do was unclip that little arm that didn't open to let me get out of park. Also my current shifter **** was no longer pushing far enough to let me get back into park so I bought an aftermarket shifter that will let me just push down and shift either direction without problems.
