Nice 06 SS! I like your choice to go with the chrome rims from your 03. I never did care for the SS rims that came stock on the 06 & 07 Montes.

I understand your concern about the premium gas. I'm down here in Windsor. I have to use premium gas in mine also. And the extra 12-14 cents per litre is a huge price to pay.

My Monte was a dealership demo for a couple years. During that time they used regular 87 octane gas. It didn't run as well as it should have. It took me a few tanks of running Sunoco Ultra 94 to get the engine running at the level it should be.

Go with the premium.

and yes, your car does look very nice.....
Thanks for all the comments and advice. The dealership filled the tank for me with Regular 87 and it seems to be driving ok but maybe thats because I haven't tried the 91. This weekend I plan on putting two coats of wax and change wheels.

As for your question MC3831, the SS can run on 4cyl because it has active fuel management or at least I think thats what they call it or DoD. I don't believe any other model has this option, only the V8's.

^ Correct... AFM/DOD is only on the LS4 equipped Monte's. And you can either listen for the change, which you can always hear because it sounds like a helicopter or you can look at the DIC in the dash where it shows you your current MPG (not average) it'll say 4cyl mode, or 8cyl mode.

Actually in 2007 they started offering Active Fuel Management on the 3900 also, but only in the Impala, because they dropped the 3900 all together in the Monte for 2007. On the 3.9L it kills half the cyl's also, so there is either 6 cyl mode, or 3 cyl mode.

So NO, none of the Monte's with a 3900 have Active Fuel Management

Chris, your Monte unfortunately does not have that technology. Though it is found on the 3.9 series engine, they made that change to the 3.9 in 2007.

Your 3.9 engine is the LZ9 and in 2007 they changed it to an LZ8 (I know it's odd the number goes down). The LZ9 has a variable length intake manifold to help gas mileage, but does not have displacement on demand. The LZ8 has both variable length intake AND DoD (or active fuel managment [AFM] they changed the name to)

The good news though, is that your LZ9 3.9 puts out 7 more HP than the LZ8 3.9

thanks Mike and of course everyone else who posted about my 3.9 LZ9, minus the DoD and AFM, but with 7 more hp than the LZ8

Hey Rick. Your are right. I do a lot of highway driving to get 23-24 mpg. But if I only do local w/o any highway, I do get about 16 mpg. So I try to save my old T-Bird for city driving (6cyl/3.8 engine). I think that's why I am still keeping the old bird. LOL!
