some of the 78's came with the 50 some came with the 350 lock up and some came with the metric.

none ever came out with the 700r as they were nto put out untill later in teh 80's

But the good news is the 350 turbo and the 400 will fit in and bolt in other then a few extra bolt on stuff you would need IE drive shaft., tranny x member for witch ever you would want if it was the 400.

Also the really good part is you cna make a verry strong and streetabel 350 for not to much money and you can actually still finde them the 400's are a bt toughfer and also will cost more.

btu you take a 350
tear it donwn and have it rebuilt with the heavey duty kit from a 4x4 truck and it will scratch every gear and will put you in your seat for a daily driver it will be a good one to have. But make sure when you do it you also add the hevay duty U joints and make sure the drive shaft is in good shape also.

I had this in mine with a line lock installed it was a blast to play with but i also had a 3500 stall to it to.

But when she would launch that tranny would take it all real well

But if you dont know how to do it take it to a tranny shop and ask them to build youa street strip tranny. bad thing is they are not goign to warrenty it knowing that yoru goign to beat on it. Just tell them you want somethign that will pull stumps and what you plan to do with the car they will set you up
