1998 Monte Carlo Door Panel Insert
I just bought my first Monte Carlo. It's a 1998 Z34. It has had several surprises, not the least being that I discovered the engine is actually from a 1999 Olds 88. I have already put several hundred dollars into it to make it decent. The door panels have a vinyl covered insert that attaches to the door panel by some funky fasteners that appear to need some kind of special wrench to remove. I just pulled the one on the drivers door off since it was almost off anyway, then I used gorilla glue to reattach. It worked great. However, the passenger side is not that bad and I would rather figure out how to get those fasteners off, so I can be a little less destructive about taking it off. Any help out there?
I imagine you're talking about those things that look like an inverse nut?
Basically, the way I removed mine was to take a small flathead, stick it under one side of the flat part, and pry it up a bit. Then I grabbed the lip with a set of needle nose pliers, and unscrewed it. Leave the lip bent up until you get it all back together, and you can push the lip back down (it won't make 100% contact like it did originally, but you'll still have probably 75-80% of the surface area)- mine never came loose, even with my sound system pounding on them.
I thought about making a tool- obviously some sort of standard size nut must fit in there, so maybe you could get a longer nut that fits (like one that is made to join pieces of all thread)- slide part of that in there, and use a wrench to remove it.
