Default 1972 Monte Carlo, what gas grade??

Hi there,

just bought a 1972 Monte C today and was wondering what is the best fuel grade to use - unleaded for sure, but then there are 3 options I believe.

Any help kindly appreciated.

Thx, M.

Hi "M",
Is it a six or V8 ? Is it stock ? Any modifications to the engine ?
Regular Gas should be good...

Gasoline Information, Octane Levels - Exxon.com < Click (It has some decent infor on fuel (gas)

<cite style="color: rgb(0, 153, 51); font-size: 14px !important; font-style: normal;">www.exxon.com/usa-english/gfm/fuels_quality_gas_faq.aspx</cite>‎

If knocking or pinging suddenly occurs, using a higher octane grade may resolve the problem. What kind of gas should I use in my lawnmower/garden ..

Tell us more about your Monte ? Pictures please.

87 should be fine unless it's had some performance mods done like a cam an pistons.Just make should you run ethanol free gas.The ethanol will eat your fuel system.

For a N/A engine with up to 9.5 - 1 compression ratio, Reg Unleaded is fine. Plus would be OK too. For 10.5 - 1 or higher you must use premium to prevent knocking. Do you know your compression ratio?

I use 87 octane in my 1970 MC and it has a 396 big block in it. I have no problems with pinging.

Unless you have performance mods on the engine, like a turbo or supercharger, regular 87 octane gas is good. Many people put premium in their car thinking they're doing their car good. Most of the time, premium isn't needed. And you're just wasting your hard earned money on premium based on marketting gimmicks by the gas stations.

The grade of fuel you use is dependent upon which engine you have. This applies to factory installed engines.

BTW - just because you can't hear an engine 'knocking' doesn't mean that detonation isn't happening. You'd be surprised how many engines I've seen with cracked and/or melted pistons from detonation that never 'knocked' due to low octane fuel.
