Default 12,000-20,000mi between oil changes? who else besides me?

Between my wife and myself, we have logged over 500,000mi on synthetic oils, one brand or another. For quite a few years now I've been changing oil and filter at 6,000mi, and rotating the tires. I run Michelin tires. When Mobil came out with their "extended performance" brand, I switched and started changing oil at 12,000mi, but changing the filter and rotating tires at 6,000mi. I amready for my next change next week with almost 36,000 on the odometer now.
Onstar just sent me my monthly vehicle diagnostic report showing at 35,119 mi, my remaining oil life was still 62%, and my next oil change should be at about 42,400mi! My last oil change was at 23,500mi. Onstar is telling me I should be able to go to 19,000mi onthis oil change! Mobil says 15,000. I'm sticking to my 12,000mi policy and changing myoil anyways.
My local Chevy dealer comes and picks up my car while I'm at work and does my basic service. Fair prices, but their Mobil 1 oil is CHEAP! $4.60/qt. Changing oil aint bad, but rotating tires sucks. I let them do it.
What kind of oil life are other Monte Carlo owners getting? Similar, I hope. Better?

I don't and never will trust a computer to tell me when to change my oil. In your manual it clearly states there is two schedules to follow. 99% of drivers need to be following the schedule that states to change your oil at 3 months or 3K miles. I have never allowed mine to go over this and never will. Why people 'play' a game of russian roulette with their engines is beyond me. It's cheap insurance to change at 3 months/3k miles. And 4.60/quart isn't cheap. I can buy 5 quarts of Mobil 1 at Wal-mart for 19.80, which equals $3.96/quart.

1. I don't let the computer tell me anything. My 500,000mi+ driving with ZERO internal problems dictates my maintenance. The computer uses a pressure sensor in the oil filter system for it's main source of info. I've made parts for these systems.
2. The owners manual says you must change the oil at least once a year, nothing about every 3,000mi. That came from using petroleum based oil that broke down after just a few miles.
3. Mobil is guaranteeing 15,000mi without lubrication failure. Any other brands doing that?
4. Wal-mart's price is $26.50 for 5qt of the Extended Performance oil, which is $5.30/qt. I pay $4.60. Further, I don't and won't shop at Wal-mart because of their political policies, like not giving benifits to their employees. Everyone deserves medical insurance.
5. We drive between 55,000 and 60,000mi a year between the 2 of us. I can't imagine doing 20 oil changes a year.
6. To me, this is cheap insurance. If you want to use the old stuff, that's up to you, but I prefer todays technology.
7. I've discussed this with my dealer, and they say as long as you follow the manual and the oil manufacture's recomendations, they are happy.MyGM extended warranty will take me to 97,500mi. They are happy with me.

I only use Mobil 1 with Mobil 1 oil filter but still will not go past 3k miles. Check the prices again as well, I'm not talking about the extended performance Mobil 1 just the regular Mobil 1. Also the manual has 2 maintenance schedules in it as well. One for areas that aren't dusty, non frequent short drives, no heavy idling in slow to stopped traffic etc.

yup, and it still ran fine
no tune up, 1 air filter replaced and thats it for 160k on it, it was just a leased vehicle so we didn't care much...but it was still fine when we took it back...its just a van..lol
this whole oil change thing every 3-5 is just a hoax...you can go longer than that

Why did you lease it to run up 160K miles? Didn't you get raped on the mileage?

I don't believe you should go more than 3,000mi on petroleum based oil. Mobil says 15,000. Onstar is telling me 19,000 (my car is thru them). I still say 12,000 with a filter change and tire rotation at 6,000.I don't want to go more than 6,000mi on a tire rotation, so 12,000 works for me. When a lube mfg. comes out with a better than 15,000mi oil guaranteed, then I will probably try it, if GM approves. All of GM's new hi-perf engines are assembled with Mobil 1 oil.
As far as the regular Mobil 1 oil, they don't guarantee it, so I wouldn't and can't recommend it for use.
I'm looking for other Onstar users that have similar results. Is there another forum that I might be better off going to for this subject? This is not just a Monte subject. Todays cars are hi-tech, and I want to know how this oil is performing with other users.
