Default 03 Monte SS Steering Noise

I have a 03 Monte SS with a 3.8 that has about 77K miles. I have noticed when I turn at low speeds I hear a noise like something is binding in the steering. It is not hard to steer, it just sounds like a knock or clunk is coming from the steering. Any ideas on what this could be or what to check first. It does not happen every time so I am not sure where to look. Just hoping someone has some similar issues.

Thanks,
Cody

Could be your power steering fluid is a little low, or that your ISS (intermediate steering shaft) needs to be greased.

Luckily it's very easy to check and fix both issues.

Start with your PS fluid and see if it's low (common in the cold) and if not, then I can give you steps for quickly greasing and checking if it is your ISS

MY 2001 Monte SS suffers from the exact same thing.
Checked the ps fluid, it's topped off. I'm guessing checking the
steering shaft won't be so easy? Not to knowledgable on how to get to it....

It's really easy to do.

I do this almost every spring with a good amount of gun oil.

Thanks for the info ChibiBlackSheep. I will try it out this week after I can some lithium grease. Hopefully, this will solve the problem, the symptoms sure sound the same as the post you linked to.

Thanks again,

For temporary relief you can try some WD-40

It won't last long at all, but if it goes away right after you know that worked and you can get a better grease

I took one of those hand Siphon pumps & took all the old fluid out of the reservoir
( It was nasty!) & then refilled with new PS fluid. Started the '98 MC & moved wheel all the way to the right & all the way over to left when moving very slowly. Came back a day later & topped it off. No whining sounds now!

Default Maybe the STUT?

Well I greased the steering shaft and while I had the front tires off the ground turning the wheel I noticed the drivers side strut making a noise. The strut was clicking when I turned the wheel. I know nothing about struts, but it was coming from what looked like a black rubber ring/bushing. Can anyone help me out here? Is my strut bad or how to I stop that noise?

Thanks,
Coors
