Default Which would be the better transmission?

Hello. I currently have a Turbo 350 transmission in my 76 Monte that is backing a small block 350 and has 3.73 gears and an Eaton posi out the back. I am wanting to change to a 4-speed auto, but I'm not sure which one to get. It's either gonna be a 200-4R or a 700-R4. I would like to know what your opinions are. I am leaning toward a 700-R4, but I've been told that the 200-4R is a better transmission. Any help would be appreciated.

u dont want to put a 200r4 in your car mainly because they arnt stong enough that the kinda tranny that comes in the s series trucks mainly that cant handle very much torque on the other hand the 700r4 is a good hot rod tranny if built right and because of the overdrive you can get some decnt gas milage out of it as well

in stock form a 700R4 is strong than a 200R4 but you can build or get one already built in the 200R4 and it can handle up to about 1200 hp it is some place out in calf. but not really sure where but either one would work just find i have a 200 mertic and a 425 hp 350 and drive it everyday with no problems it pays to just do your research on the matter hope this helps some

I think you're talking about Bowtie Overdrives. I've been to their site and have been researching their transmissions. A member of the 73-77 Chevy A-body Showcase has a 73 Monte w/ ZZ3 crate engine, 3.73's and the 200-4R. He says that he's has no problems with that transmission. He even gets 20mpg.

Look at it this way. The 200 R4 came stock with the Buick Grans National Turbo V6. That car put out a lot of power and torque. It stood up well to some abuse. The 200 has been known to have it's faults but so did the 700's. Either one will work fine and be very reilable if built right. I am putting a 200 R4 in my 86 with a modified 350 engine I am building. I had to purchase about $100.00 worth of modified parts to make the 200 strong and hold up. Go to http://www.powerglide.com/parts/parts/ALTO-MK.htm They have everything you need to beef up a 200 or 700 trans. Also, I do not have to modify the driveshaft for the 200 trans. The 700 is a different length and the shaft and trans mount have to be changed. Good luck.

i know stock v stock the 700 is the way to go, but recently ive heard of 200s being able to be built up beyond the 700s. i dont think thats very proven yet though and would run a modded 700 as a sure thing.
