V8s have a tic sometimes you could get another 5000 miles out of it still. I'd just drive it till it dies.lol

if its the lifters, you might be able to run for a while until one day something else will overheat or fail because of the excess or lack of pressure or lack of movement ... but without actually hearing it to figure it out i might as well roll some dice and put an estimate together for you ... best of luck however

you could always just send it off like the government did with all the cash for clunkers ... dump the oil and coolant ... and fill the oil back up with sodium silicate until it seizes and kills itself from the inside out ...

i still absolutely cant believe that our government actually used our money for that stupid *** program ...

anyway off the point ... build up that 454 and drop it in

it could also be an exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold flange, or a rocker that needs adjustment. i would take a scope and take a listen and see if its coming from the bottom end of the heads. if its the heads adjust the rockers.

well me and my dad did the old school use a long A** screwdrive and listen to the valves and all, came to the conclusion that one of the exhuast vavles does sound different than all the others, but the donut for the exhaust man to the piping does have a decent size leak in it,according to him thats all i hear but theres no way to tell till i fix that and then listen again.thanks for all the advice..right now im trying to figure out wether it was a fac bb or not.if it was that will save me alot of money..

i think the big block cars were fairly rare. id be surprised if you couldnt find out from the vin or the cowl tag what motor is supposed to be in it. im glad that you figured out its a valve of an exhaust leak. ticking noises always drove me crazy on my olds and even on my monte the roller rockers are in constant need of adjustment. i hate even the slightest tapping noise.

Wondering if you found out how to find original engine? Did you make it to dealer to see if they can help decode the body tag?

no i havent the local dealer said its to old for any of their records.i was blown away by that.why wouldnt they try and keep every record of every car they ever produced.but it has a front sway bar and from the height of the car it makes me think it was a factory BB.

you could try a local library or search online for a book that has vin # code break downs.

supposedly theres no way to tell if was a big block or not through the vin. heres a link with some more info.
