Question Transmission shifter question

The '95 Monte we bought, has a auto trans. The shifter handle, will not shift with out taking the shifter head off, and pushing the "cable/rod" down.

What is causing this problem ??

How do I fix it?? Is it expensive ??

Thanx

The way you've explained the issue, it sounds like the linkage is messed up. Kinda like a parking brake cable getting froze up? After a long period of time things do wear out especially cables such as the the trans cable and parking brake cable?

I believe there is a relay or a solenoid in the console that sticks, so when you press the brake pedal, the solenoid doesn't work like it should and that puny shifter handle doesn't have enough force to push it down.

SO, if it is a solenoid in the console, I wonder if anyone knows the cost or how difficult it is to replace ? I could find nothing, (maybe I wasn't looking n the right place), in the Haynes book that I bought.

it sounds like to me the handle is broken. if the solenoid wasn't releasing it would be very difficult for you to push the rod down. either way find a junk yard where you can pull the parts yourself. get the solenoid and a new handle. you may also find other handle from other GM cars that might fit and look better. i had a leather one off a Bonneville for a while before making an adapter to let me use a manual shift ****

There is a clip on the front side of the shifter handle that is gone. One has been ordered, and will be in tomorrow morning. The cost is $4.00. Will see if that fixes it. Will let you know.
