Top end speed
Hey guys,
I was curious, what speed will hurt my engine if I have 3400. I hit 135 yesterday for the first time with a 2001 LS (3400). When should I say NoWhat has everyone dealt with???? I would like to think Chevy is invincible but I dont wanna look like an *** when I Breakdown

RE: Top end speed
i have done the speedo on mine but i have the programmer. and also i would not tach out the car if i were you just to be safe.
and rember for anyone doing those speeds it dont take much at all for you to lose it. SO BE CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!!!
and also make sure you have room for stopping etc..... I did it while in Germany. i had to take it on the autobond and see what it could or wold do. it did better then i thought. on a few ocations it was over the speedo but that was more do to the hills i was on then anything else.

If you have 2.93 gearing, you were still in 3rd gear. If you have 3.29 gearing and a 3400, you will probably click into 4th gear at 118-125mph, depending on your PCM programming.
Running in 4th gear is tough on the splines... Since I went to 3.29 gears, I rarely pass 135mph now... it just makes no sense to do it.
When I was on my stock 2.93 gearing, I took it past 160mph a few times... not a bright idea, though the car still felt smooth, and still had a little left to go.
The other thing to think about is your tires. If you have stock tires, and are governed at 108mph, it's for a reason.... your tires are speed rated, and shouldn't be pushed for extended periods past that speed.

with my tires and 3.73 gears (stock for the 96 Z is 3.43) i can do about 122 in 3rd before i comanded a shift at 6500 rpm to be safely below my self imposed 6800rpm limit... 7k redline for my motor. from a program i have, it says that with my power i should be able to reach 150.

I have to agree with lav74.. Ive had my monte up to 172 k/ph and thats a little beyond what the limits are for my tires and suspension. If you have those mods done, I would say you can cruise in 3rd for as much as you like. so long as that LIM problem didnt affect your 3400, you should be able to run that all day long. The 3400 is a pretty rugged engine. I cant guaruntee the tranny would take it. Perhaps adding in a tranny temp guage would be an idea.

It's nice to have the 04. The Goodyear RSA's are Z rated (255 mph) =D
To be honest though it is the worst tire I have ever owned. It isn't worth squat in rain or snow but is supposed to be an all season high performance tire.
Going with Goodyear Triple Treds on my new set.
