Well the time has come. Im wanting to do an engine swap on my little 'ol 3400. First, I wanna know if its possible to just do a top swap from my LA1 to a L67, yeah its probably a stupid question but I dont know the answer. All this should go down within the next few months if not, its gonna haappen for sure in january. The reason is, I found a guy willing to do the labor for pretty much free when he closes his bussiness. If you guys could give me as much info as you think I need, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Just research like a mad-man.

You can't top-swap your 3400 with an L67, the only "top-swap" you could do would be a 3400/3500 hybrid.

You're going to need a wiring harness, PCM, engine, and transmission from the donor vehicle, as well as a tuner to put your VIN into the PCM

Oh trust me Ive been doing all kinds of research the last couple days making sure this is what im gonna wanna do with my money and I am pretty sure this is a for sure thing. Is there anything you guys can think of that would be a better option for the money. Keep in mind I want a fast car that I can still mod the hell out of. So, is there any reason I shouldnt do this??

A 3500 will be another 20-30hp on top of what the 3400 makes. It's worth it if you want to keep that engine and not deal with an engine swap. The reason why a 3400 can't do an L67 top swap is because they are completely different blocks. The 3400 is smaller and is a 60 degree v6, while the 3800 is bigger and is a 90 degree v6.

The L67 swap is going to be your cheapest way to go, but be prepared, there are a lotta other expenses that come with modding. I'm finding that out the hard way.

What kind of expenses are we talking here?? I mean, Im gonna have somone else do the labor for me and its all gonna be a set $2200 for the whole deal. So is there somthing other than the trans, axle, motor, and wiring??
I got a big question here also (well its not big but its left me in the dark these last couple days) is this gonna be converting into rear wheel drive?? i have thought for the longest time that all 6th gens are front wheel drive until I was on youtube today and saw a 6th gen doing back wheel donuts. Now, it was struggling to get around so thhis leads me to belive he didnt drop the money to do a full custom job for rear wheel drive since there is plenty of other things you could do before wasting the money for such a custom job??
I dont know what to think now and like I said, im in the freaking dark here??

ALL 5th-7th gen Monte's are front wheel drive. The video you saw on youtube must have been someone that did a custom conversion.

Your best bet if you want that much more power is to just get yourself a used L67 (the 3800 S/C) with transmission, and do an entire engine swap.

Breaking stuff is one- another is having repairs done if you can't do the repair work yourself. Shops won't want to touch a swapped car with a 10 foot pole.

Then labor isn't free, lol- what engine/trans etc are you getting- and what is the mileage? That sounds extremely high for an L67/4t65hd swap (especially with "free labor")- the whole powertrain shouldn't cost more than a grand unless you're getting something with super low mileage.

Keep in mind- for not too much more than your swap price- you could buy a complete 97 or 98 GTP with about 100k-125k miles with an L67 already in it. I mean we're talking ones with minor cosmetic issues and such starting at $2500. Also keep in mind that a complete totalled GTP isn't going to be worth anywhere near that- I paid $1500 for a complete totalled 98 gtp with about 70k miles like 4 or 5 years ago- I can't imagine they go for much over $1000 now with how much the car prices have tanked.

lol, no- you'll still be FWD. I don't think there is any car that is FWD that has bolt a bolt in RWD powertrain and drivetrain from another factory vehicle. Only RWD L67's I know of are in Australia anyways- at least stock ones.

Definately budget your swap. Set out how much you think you'll spend, then have $1000 more than that for "just in case".
